When it comes to removing oil stains from a concrete floor, especially in a garage, CO Hard Surfaces understands the importance of maintaining a clean and stain-free surface. Here are some effective steps to tackle oil stains on your concrete garage floor.

Act Quickly

The sooner you address an oil stain, the better the chances of complete removal. Prompt action prevents the oil from penetrating deeper into the concrete.

Absorb Excess Oil

Begin by using absorbent materials such as cat litter, sawdust, or baking soda to soak up as much of the excess oil as possible. Apply the absorbent material generously over the stain and let it sit for several hours or overnight.

Sweep and Dispose

Once the absorbent material has done its job, sweep or vacuum it up. Properly dispose of the materials in accordance with local regulations for hazardous waste.

Pre-treat with a Degreaser

Apply a high-quality concrete degreaser or a mixture of dish soap and warm water to the stained area. Use a stiff brush to scrub the stain, ensuring the degreaser penetrates into the concrete.

Scrub with a Brush

Use a stiff-bristled brush or a push broom to scrub the stained area vigorously. This mechanical action helps lift the oil from the concrete. Pay extra attention to stubborn spots.

Rinse with Hot Water

Rinse the treated area with hot water to remove the degreaser and any remaining oil residue. A pressure washer can be particularly effective for this step if available.

Repeat if Necessary

For persistent stains, you may need to repeat the degreasing and scrubbing process. Patience and thoroughness are key to achieving optimal results.

Use Kitty Litter Again

After cleaning, sprinkle a layer of kitty litter or absorbent material over the treated area. Allow it to sit for a few hours or overnight to absorb any remaining moisture.

Seal the Concrete

Consider applying a concrete sealer to the entire garage floor once the stain is removed. This not only enhances the floor's appearance but also provides added protection against future stains. This is something we are proud to do for our neighbors here at CO Hard Surfaces.

Prevent Future Stains

To avoid future oil stains, practice good maintenance habits in your garage. Place absorbent mats or rugs under vehicles, perform regular cleanings, and address spills promptly.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove oil stains from your garage's concrete floor, ensuring a clean and well-maintained surface. If you encounter persistent or extensive stains, give us a call! We are the concrete resurfacing experts.

The Importance of Concrete Resurfacing

The Importance of Concrete Resurfacing

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 11-9-2023

Concrete resurfacing is one of the main services we offer here at CO Hard Surfaces, but what does this process even entail? Put simply, concrete resurfacing is a renovation and repair process used to restore and enhance the appearance, durability, and functionality of existing concrete surfaces, such as driveways, patios, sidewalks, pool decks, and interior floors. It involves applying a thin layer of concrete or a specialized resurfacing material to the existing concrete, creating a fresh, smooth, and attractive surface. Here's why concrete resurfacing is important and when you may need it.

Importance of Concrete Resurfacing

Over time, concrete surfaces can become worn, discolored, or develop cracks and surface imperfections. Concrete resurfacing can refresh the appearance, providing a like-new finish with various decorative options like colors, textures, and patterns.

Resurfacing can also strengthen and protect the underlying concrete from further damage. It can increase resistance to stains, abrasion, and weathering, extending the surface's lifespan.

Also worth mentioning is that resurfacing is an effective way to address minor cracks, spalling, and other surface defects that may compromise the structural integrity of the concrete. This in turn, enhances safety.v

And the last reason concrete resurfacing is important or appealing is due to the fact that it is a greener option. Resurfacing an existing concrete surface is often a more environmentally friendly option than tearing it out and replacing it with new concrete. It reduces waste and the carbon footprint associated with construction.

When Concrete Resurfacing is Needed

So, how do you know when your concrete needs to be resurfaced? Concrete surfaces that have aged, lost their original color, or exhibit signs of surface wear and minor damage can benefit from resurfacing to regain their appeal and durability.

When you notice cracks, spalling (surface flaking or chipping), or minor surface imperfections in your concrete, resurfacing can help prevent further deterioration and restore the surface.

Concrete that has unsightly stains or discoloration, such as oil stains on a driveway or discoloration from weathering, can be effectively concealed with a resurfacing layer.

If your concrete has lost its luster or appears dull, resurfacing can provide a glossy, polished, or decorative finish, making the surface look new and vibrant.

Proactive resurfacing can prevent minor surface issues from developing into more significant problems, ultimately saving you money on extensive repairs or replacements.

When you want to update the look of your concrete surfaces with a new color, texture, or design, resurfacing allows you to achieve the desired aesthetic without tearing out the existing concrete.

All in all, concrete resurfacing is a cost-effective and practical solution for enhancing the appearance and longevity of your concrete surfaces. It allows you to maintain or transform the aesthetics of your property while protecting and strengthening your existing concrete. If you think your concrete needs resurfacing or you simply want to update the appearance of your concrete, contact CO Hard Surfaces.

Fall is finally here and while we love this season, it also signals that Winter is not too far behind. If you want your Winter to be a bit smoother, preparing now is key, and one thing that can make a world of difference in the snow and ice is a garage. Having a garage during Colorado winters offers several significant benefits. Here are some of them.

Protection from Snow and Ice

One of the primary benefits of a garage is that it provides a sheltered space to park your vehicle, protecting it from snow and ice accumulation. This helps prevent the need to scrape ice off windshields, clear snow from your vehicle, or deal with frozen locks and doors. Yippee!

Preservation of Vehicle Condition

Cold temperatures and road salt used for snow and ice management can be harsh on vehicles. A garage can help extend the lifespan of your vehicle and reduce the risk of rust and corrosion.

Safety in Winter Weather

A garage offers a secure and covered area for entering and exiting your vehicle during snowstorms or icy conditions. This reduces the risk of slipping and falling on icy driveways or walkways.

Improved Home Insulation

An attached garage can act as an additional buffer against cold outdoor temperatures, helping to insulate your home. This can lead to energy savings by reducing the heat loss from your living spaces.

Enhanced Security

Garages provide an additional layer of security for your vehicle and belongings. It can deter theft and vandalism, especially during winter nights when darkness sets in early.

Comfort and Convenience

And who could ignore the fact that having a garage can make your mornings during the Winter far more comfortable? Having a garage allows you to start your vehicle in a sheltered environment, making it more comfortable for your morning commute. You won't have to endure frigid temperatures while waiting for your car to warm up.

In Colorado, where winter weather can be unpredictable and challenging, a garage provides numerous advantages that enhance safety, convenience, and the overall quality of life during the colder months. It's a valuable addition to your property that can help protect your vehicles, reduce winter-related hassles, and improve your overall winter experience. If your garage has seen better days, CO Hard Surfaces can help with that. We offer concrete repair, concrete coatings and more. Just give us a call!

How Concrete Flooring Helps Spaces Maintain Comfortable Temperatures

How Concrete Flooring Helps Spaces Maintain Comfortable Temperatures

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 8-7-2023

Concrete flooring has excellent temperature-controlled properties, making it a popular choice for various applications, especially in areas where temperature regulation is essential. Why don’t we look into why concrete is so great at controlling temperatures and which applications this feature can be especially useful to.

What Makes Concrete Special?

Thermal Mass

Concrete has a high thermal mass, which means it can absorb and store heat effectively. During warmer periods, concrete floors absorb heat and keep the environment cooler. Conversely, in colder conditions, they retain heat and help maintain a warmer atmosphere.

Slow Heat Transfer

Concrete floors have a slow rate of heat transfer, which means they do not conduct heat quickly. This property helps stabilize indoor temperatures by preventing rapid heat loss or gain, thus creating a more comfortable living, or working environment.

Best Areas to Take Advantage of Concrete

Garages

Garages are often exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, especially in regions with harsh winters or scorching summers. Concrete flooring can help regulate the temperature in the garage, making it more pleasant for homeowners and protecting vehicles and tools from temperature-related damages.

Basements

Basements tend to be cooler and damp, which can be uncomfortable and promote mold growth. Concrete floors can act as a thermal buffer, minimizing temperature fluctuations and reducing moisture issues, creating a more livable and pleasant space.

Warehouses and Industrial Facilities

Temperature control is crucial in warehouses and industrial settings where certain products or equipment are sensitive to temperature changes. Concrete floors help maintain a stable environment, protecting goods and machinery from extreme temperatures.

Retail Spaces and Offices

In commercial settings, concrete flooring can assist in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures for customers and employees, enhancing their overall experience and productivity.

Residential Buildings

Concrete flooring in homes helps to balance indoor temperatures, contributing to energy efficiency and reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. Who doesn’t like saving money on their energy bills?

Restaurants and Food Processing Areas

Temperature control is crucial in food preparation and processing areas to ensure food safety and quality. Concrete flooring helps maintain a controlled environment, complying with health and safety standards.

Temperature control is just one of the many reasons that concrete flooring can benefit you, whether we are talking about a residential or commercial property. If you are ready to reap the benefits of this incredible material, look no further than CO Hard Surfaces to help.

How to Care for Concrete Walkways

How to Care for Concrete Walkways

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 7-11-2023

A well designed and properly cared for pathway can increase the curb appeal of your home and it can make spending time in and around your yard more pleasant. That becomes less true once a pathway is in disrepair, though. So, how can you make your concrete pathways stay in tip top shape? Here are a few ways.

Regular Sealing

Applying a quality concrete sealer is one of the most important steps in protecting your concrete pathways. Sealers help prevent moisture penetration, which can lead to cracking and spalling. Choose a sealer suitable for outdoor concrete and follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps prevent dirt, debris, and chemicals from damaging the concrete surface. Sweep or use a leaf blower to remove loose dirt and leaves. For more stubborn stains, use a mild detergent or specially formulated concrete cleaner, followed by rinsing with water.

Avoid Harsh Deicing chemicals

During winter, avoid using deicing chemicals like rock salt on concrete pathways. These chemicals can promote the breakdown of the concrete surface. Instead, use sand or non-corrosive alternatives for traction on icy surfaces.

Proper Drainage

Ensure that your concrete pathways have proper drainage to prevent water from pooling or accumulating. Standing water can penetrate the concrete, leading to erosion and damage over time. If necessary, adjust the slope or install drainage channels to redirect water away from the pathway.

Repair Cracks Promptly

Monitor your concrete pathways regularly for any cracks that may appear. Small cracks can widen over time, especially in freeze-thaw climates. Promptly repair cracks using appropriate concrete patching materials to prevent further damage.

Maintain Vegetation

Weed eating is for more than just aesthetics! Left unchecked, they can be a damaging force to your concrete surfaces. Therefore it is important to keep vegetation, such as grass and weeds, away from the edges of the concrete pathways. Overgrown roots can exert pressure on the concrete, leading to cracks and damage. Trim vegetation regularly and create a clear border between the pathway and surrounding greenery.

Regular Inspections

Conduct regular inspections of your concrete pathways to identify any signs of damage or deterioration. Catching problems early allows for timely repairs and maintenance, preventing them from worsening.

By following these care and maintenance practices, you can help extend the lifespan of your concrete pathways, reduce the likelihood of cracking and spalling, and keep them looking their best for years to come. If you need help sealing your concrete pathways or repairing any damaged portions, CO Hard Surfaces is a team you can trust to do the job right. Give us a call when you have concrete maintenance needs.

Posted on 6-13-2023

CO Hard Surfaces knows how valuable concrete can be for all sorts of flooring applications, but it can specifically shine in the basement. Concrete flooring can be an excellent choice for basements in Colorado homes and here are some of the reasons.

Durability

Concrete is an incredibly durable material, capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic and resisting wear and tear. This is especially important in basements where moisture and temperature fluctuations may occur. Concrete floors are less likely to crack, or warp compared to other flooring options.

When It Is Time to Reseal Your Concrete Patio

When It Is Time to Reseal Your Concrete Patio

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 3-21-2023

A concrete patio can add value and functionality to your outdoor space, providing a durable and long-lasting surface for entertaining, relaxing, and dining. However, concrete is porous, which means that it can absorb moisture and stains if it is not properly sealed. Over time, the sealant on your concrete patio can wear down, leaving it vulnerable to damage and decay. Here are some guidelines for when you should consider having your concrete patio resealed.

First off, it's important to note that concrete sealants have varying lifespans depending on the type of sealant, the climate, and the level of foot traffic on the patio. As a rule, you should plan on having your concrete patio resealed every two to three years. However, if you notice any signs of damage or wear before this period, it's important to have it resealed sooner to prevent further damage.

One of the main indicators that your concrete patio needs to be resealed is the appearance of cracks or chips. Cracks in the concrete can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as temperature changes, soil settlement, and heavy foot traffic. When the sealant on your patio wears down, it can make these cracks worse, allowing moisture and debris to seep into the concrete and exacerbating the damage. If you notice any cracks or chips in your concrete patio, it's important to have it inspected by a professional and resealed as soon as possible.

Another sign that your concrete patio needs to be resealed is discoloration or staining. Concrete is porous, which means that it can absorb liquids and chemicals if it is not properly sealed. Over time, this can lead to discoloration and staining on the surface of the patio. If you notice any areas of discoloration or staining on your concrete patio, it's important to have it resealed to prevent further damage and restore the appearance of the surface.

Finally, if you live in an area with harsh weather conditions, such as extreme temperatures or frequent rainfall, you may need to have your concrete patio resealed more frequently. These weather conditions can cause the sealant to wear down more quickly, leaving the concrete vulnerable to damage and decay. It's important to have your patio inspected regularly to ensure that it is properly sealed and protected from the elements.

At the end of the day, a concrete patio can provide a durable and long-lasting outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing. However, it's important to have it properly sealed and maintained to prevent damage and decay. If you notice any signs of wear or damage, such as cracks, discoloration, or staining, it's important to have your patio inspected and resealed as soon as possible to prevent further damage and extend the lifespan of your patio. Concrete Flooring Shines in the Winter

Concrete Flooring Shines in the Winter

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 2-9-2023

Winter in Colorado presents some unique challenges when caring for the floors in our homes and commercial spaces. Especially this Winter! Snow, ice, and ice melting chemicals can find their way into our spaces by hitching a ride on our shoes, the paws of our pets, or simply by opening the front door and the wind inviting these corrosive elements in. And these elements can indeed be corrosive and damaging. If left to linger on tile or wood flooring, snow, ice, and ice melt will begin to scratch flooring and leave it dull. If these elements find their way onto carpet, they can discolor the fabric and create an environment that makes mold and mildew develop more readily.

There is one type of flooring that really shines when faced with these harsh elements and that is polished concrete flooring. Polished concrete flooring is tough, durable, and long lasting. When Winter threatens the beauty of other types of flooring, polished concrete will remain unchanged.

In addition to being near impervious to degradation at the hands of Winter elements, polished concrete also happens to be quite insulating. Most of us want to keep cold air out and warm air in during the chilly months. And while you may not instantly think of concrete flooring to do this, it does it quite well. It is a naturally temperature regulating material. Which is of great value when the temperatures outside swing in extreme degrees.

When concrete flooring is exposed to the sun, it can store heat emitted by the sun in a process called thermal mass. The concrete collects this warmth and releases it slowly throughout the day and into the night. Meaning that you naturally get to enjoy solar powered heated floors. If your flooring does not get direct sun throughout the day, however, concrete flooring is an excellent candidate for radiant floor heating systems. This combo creates a truly cozy and comforting experience as you walk about your space.

When you live in a cold Winter climate like we do in Colorado, considering how your flooring will hold up during the icy months is important. If you are interested in a flooring option that is durable, easy to care for, and energy regulating, contact CO Hard Surfaces! We would love to explain more of the benefits of concrete flooring and how it can enhance your space.

A Waterproof Flooring Option

A Waterproof Flooring Option

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 1-10-2023

If you prioritize ease of maintenance and durability above all for your indoor space, look no further than concrete flooring. When compared to tile, carpet, or hardwood, none of these flooring options stand up to the durability and hardiness that concrete offers.

While extremely durable on its own, concrete does have one notable hamartia: porosity. But that flaw is easily remedied once polished. How so? Let’s discuss that.

How Polished Concrete Protects Your Flooring

Concrete is most commonly seen outside in the form of walkways and driveways, but it makes a great interior flooring material as well. When it is outside, however, any moisture that comes in contact with it evaporates rather quickly. This is not exactly the case when concrete is located indoors. Which means that waterproofing your indoor concrete flooring should be a priority.

Polished concrete helps to waterproof concrete by sealing its inherent pores. By doing so it prevents a multitude of problems from occurring in the first place. One such problem that can take hold in concrete is mold development. The pores in concrete provide the perfect hiding place for mold to take hold in, all you have to do is add water. But if you have polished concrete, mold becomes irrelevant.

Water is a powerful element. Over the course of thousands of years, it can carve canyons out of mountains. It can make quick work of damaging your concrete flooring structurally as well. You can prevent erosion, etching, and scarring to your concrete by having it polished.

How to Keep Your Concrete Waterproof

We know that concrete is a low maintenance material but that does not mean that it is a no maintenance material. To maintain concrete’s waterproof quality, you should take care to have it professionally refinished from time to time. When exactly you should have this done depends on how much wear and traffic your flooring faces. But a good rule of thumb is that if the concrete begins to look quite dull, it is time for a refinishing.

And when the time for a polish comes, your friends here at CO Hard Surfaces will be ready and able to help!

Concrete Flooring Keeps Buildings Hygienic

Concrete Flooring Keeps Buildings Hygienic

Unhealthy indoor air quality can be caused by several factors, including the off-gassing of toxic chemicals from paints and finishes, carpeting, manufactured wood goods attached with high- formaldehyde glues, dust mites, mold spores, mildew, and even some cleaning solutions. Half of all illnesses are directly linked to air quality issues within the home.

Concrete floors are highly valued for their benefits to the environment and human health. The use of concrete flooring not only enhances the visual appeal of a room but also reduces the number of toxic compounds in the air. Low-volatile-organic-compound (VOC) concrete floors, made possible by advancements in concrete flooring product formulation, contribute to preserving high-quality indoor air.

Use Polished Concrete to Enhance Indoor Air Quality

Treating Allergies

Carpets are filthy and provide a haven for dust mites, pollen, and other allergens. It's a significant contributor to the development of allergic reactions. Concrete flooring is hypoallergenic because it doesn't collect dust and other allergens and is easy to keep clean.

Enhance the Quality of Indoor Air

Mold development in buildings has been related to various health issues, including migraines, pneumonia, and lowered immune systems. Mold can develop on virtually any organic material if conditions like temperature, moisture, and humidity are met.

Adhesives and padding used in carpet installations may also off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Vinyl and linoleum adhesives can also contribute to indoor pollution levels.

Concrete floors are impervious to the growth of mold, mildew, and other microorganisms that feast on decomposing organic matter.

Clear the Air of Particles

Another benefit to choosing polished concrete for your flooring is that they are compatible with radiant in-floor heating systems. And when you have radiant floor heating, you can say goodbye to the kicked up dust from traditional forced air systems. Without dust being blown about through forced air systems, you can breathe easier.

Protection from Harmful Chemicals

Polished concrete has not been treated with chemicals or sealers that could potentially emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that harm human health. A simple sweep and a wet mop using non-toxic, mild detergents is all that's needed to keep them looking brand new. Due to its lack of influence on indoor air quality, concrete flooring is even being used in healthcare facilities.

If you think that concrete is the flooring choice for you, contact our team! Colorado Hard Surfaces transform concrete surfaces into beautiful works of art. We will also repair any existing concrete damage, such as cracks, spalling, and discoloration.

Staining concrete with a warm neutral often does a better job at showcasing the beauty of your home.

More often than not, driveways are not given a second thought when addressing curb appeal. But that shouldn’t be the case because they hold a lot of power when it comes to first impressions, whether you realize it or not. Repairing, stamping, and staining your concrete driveway can completely transform your entryway. When you give attention to seemingly mundane aspects of your home, they make a big difference in making a house a home and creating a space that is unique to you. If you want to increase your homes’ curb appeal by giving attention to your driveway, don’t hesitate to reach out to our CO Hard Surfaces team!

A Guide to Cleaning Concrete Floors

A Guide to Cleaning Concrete Floors

Posted on 10-11-2022

One of the most powerful draws to decorative concrete floors is how easy they are to maintain. Even still, there are a few maintenance tips that you should know in order to keep your concrete in good condition for as long as possible. Here’s our guide to cleaning and maintaining concrete flooring.

Cleaning Concrete Floors

Thanks to concrete flooring, many homeowners can have the look of expensive materials like hardwood and marble but at a fraction of the cost or maintenance. And the cleaning regime is a breeze. Here are some main cleaning takeaways you should have as a part of your cleaning routine.

● Wipe up spills as soon as possible. This will ensure that acidic spills especially are not given the opportunity to eat away at your protective sealant.

● Regular sweeping or vacuuming will help maintain the look of your concrete floors.

● Use a neutral pH cleaner to mop flooring. Skip the bleach and ammonia, as these can also etch away at your protective sealant.

Maintaining Concrete Floors

Concrete is an incredibly tough and durable material. You know that already. The material itself in combination with the protective sealant it has on top creates a surface that blocks out dirt to ward off staining and it repels water which means that your concrete will not erode away. If your concrete is beginning to look dull or show signs of wear, however, it most likely means that that protective coating has worn off. Maintenance for concrete flooring basically consists of resealing it when you see these signs.

And that’s pretty much all there is to cleaning and maintaining your concrete floors, inside or out!

If your concrete flooring needs a fresh seal, give your friends at CO Hard Surfaces a call. Or if your concrete has sustained damage or has cracks in it, we can restore the beauty of your concrete with our repair services.

Designing with Concrete Flooring

Designing with Concrete Flooring

Gone are the days of concrete floors being solely in industrial spaces. Many modern designers and home stylists are gravitating to concrete floors for a multitude of reasons. But despite their incredibly easy cleaning and maintenance needs, some people are turned off to them because they feel that they make a home feel too cold. Far from it! We want to share with you some ways that concrete flooring can make a home feel homey and cool but never cold.

Natural Elements

The cool, steely grays of a concrete floor pair nicely with natural elements like jute rugs and raw wood furniture. Together, this combination creates a surprisingly warm and inviting space.

Minimalist Goldmine

For those that ascribe to a minimalist home decor style, concrete floors couldn’t be a better match. The neutral grays of the concrete do well not to clash or compete for attention against your other design elements and they provide a neutral palette to rest your eye.

Artistic Backdrop

For those that enjoy a bit more color in their homes, concrete flooring provides the perfect backdrop. Instead of adding to busyness, the cool blue-gray floor will allow your wall art to really pop and be the star of the show.

Sophisticated and Chic

Opposite of making a space feel unfinished, concrete floors can make a space feel elevated and chic. Pair these floors with marble countertops and gold or brass fixtures and you have a recipe for a timeless and sophisticated room.

Old World Charm

Concrete is also an amazing choice for a bathroom floor. Not only is it easy to clean and can serve as the base of your shower, but it also lends a certain old-world charm to the room.

The bottom line is that concrete can be a versatile design element in your home. It will essentially take on whatever vibe you bring to it from cool and edgy to warm and colorful. And grays aren't the only concrete color option either! At CO Hard Surfaces, we can stain and score your concrete flooring with almost any color you desire. Reasons to Hire a Professional for Concrete Repair

Reasons to Hire a Professional for Concrete Repair

Posted on 8-8-2022

It's easy to see why concrete is used for all sorts of applications. It is an extremely tough and long-lasting material. It can withstand heavy loads and stands up to all kinds of harsh weather conditions. That being said, concrete is not eternally impervious to all things. Over time, it can develop large cracks and pits. Some small repairs can easily be made by individuals, but for large repairs, having a professional do the work is ideal. Here’s why.

Do Concrete Cracks Need to Be Repaired?

Many people wonder if cracks in concrete even need to be repaired. Some posit that they are simply cosmetic, but this is not the case. If left for long enough, cracks in concrete will spider and expand across walls and floors. Then as buildings naturally shift, these can create bulging bits, which will disrupt the function of your floors and walls. Additionally, cracks will allow moisture that can ruin the materials around it. In worst cases, cracks can allow dangerous radon into your building.

Why Hire a Professional

The first reason to hire a professional is simply because they have all the special tools, equipment, and knowledge needed for the job. It can be complicated and stressful to learn all about the right types of materials, renting and learning how to use specialty tools, and so on. On top of that, it can be even more stressful to know that if not done right, you will have to start all over.

This leads well into our next consideration, hiring a professional will save you money. Because they already have the materials, equipment, and knowledge for the job, those are all things you do not need to source. Professionals will also do the job right the first time, which means that you won’t have to spend extra money on rentals and materials a second time.

And the third reason to hire a professional is because they will follow all safety measures needed. Cutting concrete can be dangerous. It requires the use of a jigsaw, which can seriously harm you if not handled correctly. On top of that, they know how to handle the materials needed for the job without causing harm to the surrounding space or themselves.

If you have concrete that needs repairs, don’t hesitate to call the professionals here at CO Hard Surfaces. In addition to repairing your concrete surfaces, we can increase their beauty with our scoring, staining, and epoxy options.

Advantages of a Concrete Patio

Advantages of a Concrete Patio

Patios can be built around pools or onto the exterior of your home in order to provide a place for friends and family to sit, relax, and enjoy each other’s company. There are many different materials that can make for a great patio, but we believe that concrete patios offer the most in terms of durability, room for aesthetic, and ease of maintenance. Allow us to explain in more detail some of the advantages of a concrete patio.

Other popular materials for patios are wood and stone. One of the major disadvantages for these materials, however, is that they are much more expensive than concrete to install and to maintain.

For slate and other stone patios, their arrangement leaves little cracks in between each stone paver. This space allows weeds to grow, and we all know that regularly pulling weeds is an undesirable chore. So, in addition to being more expensive, stone patios require more upkeep to maintain a nice look.

Wood patios, on the other hand, are influenced heavily by the outside elements. Heavy rain, snow, and foot traffic can wear down the wood. If the wood is not regularly stained and sealed, exposure to moisture can cause it to rot and splinter. Sealants also offer UV protection, so if your wood patio is not regularly treated, constant exposure to the sun will cause it to discolor and become brittle. Additionally, some bugs love to feast on wood and if your patio becomes infested with these pests, it can prove dangerous and expensive.

When you consider concrete as a material, it is relatively cheap, and it is quite easy to maintain. When confronted with harsh weather, concrete holds up extremely well. And as far as cleaning concrete goes, all that you need is to rent a power washer to blast away dirt. Concrete is also very versatile when it comes to style. Love the look of stone but don’t love the price tag? Concrete can be easily stamped or scored in a way that looks very similar to real stone. Do you desire a certain color? Concrete is also easily stained to suit any color preference you have.

All in all, patios are great additions to backyards and concrete is a great material that allows you to get the most out of your patio. If you want to discuss all the possibilities of a concrete patio, contact CO Hard Surfaces today!

Questions About Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings Answered

Questions About Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings Answered

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 6-8-2022

At CO Hard Surfaces, one of our most popular services is garage coatings. More specifically, epoxy garage coatings. This type of coating is durable, attractive, and quickly installed. If you are curious to know more about the benefits of an epoxy coating as well as our process, here are some of the most commonly asked questions that we get on the subject.

How Long Until I Can Use My Garage Again?

Of course, times vary depending on the size and scope of each project, but generally, a garage coating will take about 5-8 hours of labor to install. Sometimes this labor can be spread out over two days, depending on the specifics of the garage. After the coating has been installed, you need to allow it 24-48 hours to cure. So, a rough estimate would be 3-4 days before you can drive in your garage again.

Can You Repair Damaged Concrete Before Application?

If your current garage flooring is cracked and damaged, no need to worry, we can fix that. We are experts and have the proper tools and materials needed to repair concrete so that when epoxy is laid over it, it will look flawless.

How Do You Prep the Concrete?

After we make any needed repairs, we use Diamond-Grinding and Shot Blasting to prepare the surface. We do not use acid washing or any kind of etching because this process does not create the texture that the concrete needs in order for the epoxy to properly bond to it. Acid is also difficult to neutralize, and if the concrete is not the correct pH, it can damage the new coating.

What Type of Maintenance Does Epoxy Require?

One of the biggest pros to epoxy coatings is the fact that they are low maintenance. Motor oil and other substances will not stain your coating. Cleaning the floor is as simple as misting them with water and running a squeegee over it.

Will the Coating Turn Yellow When Exposed to the Sun?

No, it will not. The top coating we use is UV tolerant, which means that it will not yellow when exposed to the sun.

And there you have it! A quick run-down of some of the most asked questions regarding our epoxy concrete coatings. If you have more specific questions that were not answered here or you would like to get a quote for your project, give us a call!

Benefits of Polishing Concrete

Benefits of Polishing Concrete

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 5-6-2022

At CO Hard Surfaces, we have many years of experience polishing concrete. It is what we do best. The majority of people that use our concrete polishing services are commercial, industrial, and retail spaces. But what exactly is concrete polishing and how can it benefit your space? Let’s discuss that.

What Is Polished Concrete?

Concrete is universally recognized as a tough and durable material. It is no wonder that commercial and retail spaces and even some homeowners choose to take advantage of this as a flooring material. But just because you want a durable option, doesn't mean it cannot also be beautiful. And that is where concrete polishing comes into play.

Polished concrete is a wax-free, low maintenance flooring option. To polish concrete, heavy duty specialized machines are used to grind down the material into the desired texture and shine level. It is similar to the process of sanding and finishing wood floors.

What Are the Benefits of Polished Concrete?

There are many benefits to polished concrete. For starters, it is an extremely budget friendly option. If the slab on the property is a good grade and condition, you can save yourself the expense of purchasing new flooring altogether.

As we already touched on, concrete is an incredibly durable material. Ultimately, this means that it will not damage easily, and it will last for years and years and years.

Concrete is also appealing to many because it is low maintenance. Unlike carpet, dust and debris will not settle into the depths of your concrete floor. This reduces allergen exposure and makes concrete easy to clean. And unlike hardwood floors, concrete does not require refinishing and replacing nearly as often.

In addition to polishing, concrete can be scored and stained with any design or color of your choosing. Adding style to concrete floors is easy.

Do you dream of hosting summer BBQs and gatherings, but your drab concrete patio is standing in the way? Don’t let a worn-out patio stop you from gathering with friends and family. Revitalize your concrete patio with one of these suggestions!

Add Decking

If your patio is cracked, crumbling, and a dreary gray, this can be a damper visually but also a physical hazard. You don’t want people to accidentally trip and hurt themselves on your property. One way you can fix this problem and add some warmth to your outdoor space is to cover over your patio with decking!

Layer Pavers

If your concrete patio slab is looking a little too homogenous, you can add visual interest with the help of pavers. Pavers are often used to add borders and curves to the landscape, but you can also use them to build a firepit! Who doesn’t love a good bonfire?

Lay Down a Rug

One of the simplest ways to update a concrete patio is with a rug. A large, striking area rug can turn a boring space into a stylish one in an instant. This is also a great option for those that like to change their outdoor decor seasonally, since you can easily have a few nice rugs that you can rotate out.

How Your Business Can Avoid a Liability Lawsuit

How Your Business Can Avoid a Liability Lawsuit

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 3-7-2022

Accidents happen. Even the most meticulously kept commercial property is not exempt from this truth. If you are a business owner or own a property that can be accessed by the public, how can you protect yourself from premises liability lawsuits?

What Are Some Common Liability Claims?

Some of the most common liability claims include slips, falls, dog bites, and work-related injuries. The common thread among these claims will focus on whether you as the property owner took reasonable care of the space to prevent injuries.

How To Avoid a Liability Lawsuit

Regular Property Inspections

One of the best things you can do to prevent injuries from occurring on your property is to regularly inspect the premises. Take note of potentially dangerous spots or damaged sidewalks or railings. Fix problems if you can and warn others of problems that you cannot. If your property is located in an area where snow and ice are a thing, make sure to lay down salt or slip resistant mats down to prevent hazards related to these elements.

Warn People of Hazards

If you cannot fix an issue immediately or at all, it is important that you make an effort to warn people of the potential hazard instead. This could look like blocking off a dangerous area with caution tape or placing a wet floor sign near slippery areas. When you do your part to warn others of potential dangers, even if an accident should occur on your property, it will be harder to pin the blame on you.

Make Needed Repairs

And if you can, make repairs to mend potential hazards. This could include having buckles stretched from carpets, shoveling snow, or laying down salt over ice. If your property includes concrete stairs or walkways, these need to be kept in good repair as well. Cracked, crumbing, or otherwise compromised concrete is a common tripping hazard. At CO Hard Surfaces, we specialize in concrete repair. Give a call today if your concrete needs mending and steer clear of liability lawsuits!

How to Decorate Using Concrete

How to Decorate Using Concrete

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 2-4-2022

Concrete is an extremely strong and tough material. It is often used when building foundations, streets, and other structural items that need a sturdy base. Because of this, you may think of concrete solely as a foundational material that should be built on top of and covered up. But many people are seeing the value of using concrete in designing homes and buildings. The natural variations in shades of gray offer instant visual interest without being busy and its low maintenance and nearly indestructible makeup allow you to use this material anywhere you please. If you are interested in the idea of highlighting concrete in your design and decor elements but do not know where to begin, here are a few ideas.

Accent Wall

Creating a faux concrete wall using paint and plaster is a big trend right now, but if you can have the real thing, why wouldn’t you? An entire room of bare concrete walls might come off a bit cold, but an accent wall can be just the right amount. Incorporating a concrete accent wall into your home design will play well with industrial, minimalist, and urban aesthetics.

Furniture

If you want to try out concrete elements in a way that does not require a big commitment, start out by incorporating some concrete furniture. Vases, lamps, side tables, and similar items are an easy way to accent your home’s style with modern industrial style. Or if you are not opposed to permanent fixtures, a concrete kitchen island can make a dramatic and practical addition.

Floors and Stairs

Flooring is a natural choice to show off the qualities and characteristics of concrete. In fact, many homes and businesses already have concrete flooring, it might just be hiding beneath carpet. There are two routes you can take when it comes to concrete flooring, either polished or sealed. Polished concrete gives off a highly reflective finish and can have lovely earthy tones added into the finish. Sealed concrete will leave you with more of the natural elements of concrete while still protecting it and allowing it to perform at its peak. Either polished or sealed options will leave you with an impressively stylish floor.

So why not give concrete a place in your home? It's a sturdy material that is bound to last you a lifetime and adapt with your changing style over the years. And when you need your concrete sealed, repaired, polished, or anything else, contact CO Hard Surfaces to help.

Reasons Why You Should Install an Epoxy Coating on Your Basement Floor

Reasons Why You Should Install an Epoxy Coating on Your Basement Floor

By CO Hard Surfaces
Posted on 1-14-2022

Have you ever seen an epoxy coated floor before? Odds are that you have. They have a seemingly impossible glossy finish that is hard to ignore. But did you know that epoxy coated floors are not only beautiful but functional? It’s true. They can be great for any flooring, but they are of particular benefit to concrete basement flooring. Allow us to explain.

Mold Resistant and Waterproof

The first reason why epoxy flooring is great for basements is because they create a waterproof and mold resistant environment. Concrete basements are naturally damper and moisture prone simply from being beneath the ground. But the basement is also going to be where water collects if you have a broken water pipe or anything else of that nature. An epoxy coating creates a waterproof barrier. This means that any water that is present will just sit on top of your floors, where you can then remove the water easily without it causing any further damage. And a bonus is that epoxy is resistant to mold, which is a common problem that occurs in basements. But you can have peace of mind with an epoxy floor knowing that the likelihood of mold taking hold in your basement is significantly low.

Ease of Maintenance

As we touched on briefly before, messes that find their way to your basement floor can be easily cleaned up thanks to an epoxy coating. Dirt and debris are a breeze to sweep away and stains will have a difficult time leaving their mark. Thanks to the smooth finish, mopping only takes a moment. Caring for a floor truly couldn’t be easier.

Incredibly Durable

Durability is always a consideration. You want to invest in something that will last for a long time, and an epoxy coating will. Not only will it protect your basement floor by sealing cracks and gaps, but the epoxy itself is well protected. You do not have to worry about it peeling or flaking away after years of use.

Beautiful Finishes

Things that are highly functional are rarely beautiful, but epoxy coatings are. They come in any color imaginable, so if you want to try out a fun color, you can. But even if you like a more muted option, the end result will still be equally stunning.

With a bit of careful consideration and planning, installing an epoxy coating is something any homeowner can do. The room for error, however, often leaves people frustrated with the results. If you want to ensure that you get a durable and beautiful floor, reach out to CO Hard Surfaces today.
